One of the statements you hear every waking moment of your life is, “Don’t be so confident in people because people change with time”. Mostly, people say this out of the pain and distrust created by changing people under changing circumstances. People mostly say this when they feel the person in question has changed negatively.

Don’t get me wrong. Change is the only thing that is constant and people don’t only change to become worse, but people change for the better too. Also, people change for many reasons. Someone may change his/her attitude towards another person because of the other person’s attitude. However, the focus of noeses here is to examine the negative intrinsic changes in people. In other words, negative changes in a person’s overall value system. For a long time, we have attributed these negative changes to the fact that, “it’s human nature” or “we are just human”. Yes, we are human, but is that enough justification? How long are we going to be human? If we are going to attribute everything to being human then our world will never get better.

Do you know what I think? I think people change because they are not intentional enough. People don’t actively interact and engage with their lives every step of the way. People don’t make the conscious effort to live according to their values and beliefs. You need to be intentional even in the little things. You need to be fully aware and conscious of your every action. You need to be intentional even when you are caught in the spur of the moment otherwise, you will change to your own surprise. Don’t take anything for granted; don’t take any action or situation for granted. Everyone wants to get lost in the moment. Everyone wants to just go with the flow. Everyone wants to just go all out. People want to have adventurous experiences. I am not saying that you should not do any of the above. What I am saying is simple; be thoughtful, be deliberate and fully aware of yourself and keep your values in mind every step of the way. So get lost in the moment intentionally, go with the flow intentionally, go all out intentionally, and be adventurous intentionally otherwise, before you know it you have changed into something else. Otherwise, you will become someone you never imagined you would be and you will not feel guilty about it. Otherwise, you will hurt your loved ones. Otherwise, you will break hearts and cause disappointments. You will also hurt yourself in the process; people will lose trust in you and you will lose trust in people. I admit that being intentional is not easy but just like Barack Obama said in his last speech to the American people; we need to “guard against a weakening of the values that make us who we are”.

Be intentional every step of the way

Look back at your old self. See how you have changed with time. See how your perceptions have changed. Do you ever think about it? See how easily you have broken some important promises. See how easily you have replaced your most treasured values. Now you have a false belief that everyone is like you. This is exactly how it happens. You end up changing your values to suit your actions instead of changing your actions to suit your values. If you don’t watch yourself, you will find yourself in habits you never imagined possible with you. No one is safe. It doesn’t matter how religious or spiritual you are and it doesn’t matter whether you know your values off-head or not. What matters is whether you will hold onto your values when certain situations present themselves.

It’s not too late if you think you have “fallen”. I can say that to some extent, it’s not your fault. We are human and we have natural tendencies. The good news is that each and every one of those tendencies can be put under control once you begin to live more consciously. There is hope for you. Don’t give up and don’t leave anything to chance.

Intentional people elicit trust. You can only trust someone who is consistent in their values and persistent in their actions. Their opinions might change but their core values will remain the same. So if you want to be trustworthy, you must be intentional. How can you trust someone who is not consistent in their values? I believe that one of the major causes of distrust in this world is that not many people are intentional enough. People just don’t give you a reason to trust them in “impossible” situations. So how can you become intentional? The very first step to being intentional is to understand that anyone could be anything, good or bad. It doesn’t matter how “good” you think you are, you can do the most horrible thing. All humans are born with both positive and negative tendencies. Where you lean towards depends on how intentional you are; but most often than not when you let yourself lose its more likely that you will lean towards the negative. Once you completely understand and internalize this truth, you can begin to consciously live your life.

Being Intentional elicits trust and makes you more reliable

In conclusion, It is true that we are human and it is true that people change, but I believe that with more intention, we can skew our changes towards positives away from negatives thereby, making the world a better place with more love, more trust, less hurt and less disappointment. Be intentional. Be deliberate. Cheers!

2017 AND YOU

Here we go again. There is a new wind blowing; the wind of change; the wind of a brand new year. It is the wind of 2017. Do you know what is interesting about this wind? Can you guess? Well, what I have noticed is that everyone’s song has changed. Everyone is singing a new song.

People’s songs of discontent have changed to songs of gratitude. People’s songs of sadness have changed to songs of happiness (Happy New Year). People are singing songs of new possibilities; songs of new goals. All of a sudden people have found new motivations and energy to do the impossible in 2017. The other bit is that people stepped their feet in church for the first time during the year to praise God like never before. It will interest you to know that even the birds in the sky are singing new songs and the crickets at night are chirping the New Year way. It is called the 2017 FEVER.

This new excitement makes me happy for you. My only question however is; how long is this fever going to last? The painful reality is that 2017 is not going to bring you the positive changes that you desire. You need to bring the positive changes to 2017. You see, those who are achieving their goals didn’t have to wait till the end of the year to get motivated. Because they have habituated ways of living, they are motivated throughout the year. In fact, the 31st December, 2016 is a just like any other day in 2016. It is not the most important day of the year. It is not how you feel right now or the goals you set right now that matters. It is how you will feel during the year when you get too comfortable to do anything. It is how you will feel during the year when you have your back against the wall, when it seems everything is falling apart, and when all motivation is lost, that matters. Ultimately, it is your attitude and your commitment that will matter in 2017 if you want to make any difference.

Don’t let your excitement right now die an early death. It is my desire that you will carry this excitement with you throughout the year in the following ways:

  • *      Make every day of the year important; make every day a 31st December.
  • *      Be grateful every blessed day.
  • *      Be happy every day.
  • *      Be motivated every day.
  • *      Assess yourself against the goals you set for yourself consistently throughout the year.
  • *      Take time to reflect during the year.

When it comes to your resolutions, the answers to the following questions might help:

  • *      Do you have goals?
  • *      Which goals haven’t you achieved?
  • *      Do you need to do anything different this year?

If you don’t have any goals in life at all then set goals. Reaffirm your commitment to the goals you haven’t achieved if you already have goals. Change what needs to be changed and make your year a fulfilling one.

In conclusion, I humbly suggest that you carry your new excitement with you throughout 2017 even as you strive to achieve your goals. Make every day in 2017 important. Be grateful every day and remember that it is not about the feeling right now or the goals you set right now, it is about your ATTITUDE and COMMITMENT in 2017. What I wish for you is positive attitude and commitment throughout the year, and long life and Prosperity. Happy New Year 2017!

Take that baby step. Just do it!

We have gotten to an essential part of the Revelations of Progress series. This is what crowns everything. This is the post on how to take the first step.

Many are those who have dreams. Many are those who have brilliant ideas but few are those who manifest great ideas in the form of great products. Many are those who wish but few are those who get. In many cases the differentiation principle is that those who actually progress take real steps to manifest their dreams and aspirations. So what is this action? You might have been told many times to take action but you were probably never told how to take that action in ABC terms. How can you begin to take the first step? What do you need? Let me tell you a story:

A story is told of a couple who saw the opportunity to solve the problem of accommodation in a certain tourism area in Ghana. As a result they conceived and visualized a hotel with so many luxury rooms; something like a 5 star hotel.

But there were many obstacles. They needed so much money to start; money to buy a land, money to construct and furnish a building of so many rooms. There was also the problem of getting skilled labor around. This was an area with no stable telecommunication and internet connection.  An area with erratic water supply. On the other the capital available could barely buy a land big enough for a hotel that size. What I have said is even an understatement. Their back was virtually against the wall. They had every reason to ditch that idea and just move on with their lives but they didn’t.

Do you know what they did? They used their available resources to buy a small land (2 plots) on which they built a two-room guest house that shared a bathroom with no restaurant. Remember, this was still a remote area with all the inconveniences like little or no telecommunication and internet connection. Within a year or so they had added five self-contained rooms on the same land. This time around with a bar and restaurant. This came with all the challenges of starting a business for the first time. There were tough times. To cut a long a short story short, within a space of about eight years they bought a bigger land and the hotel now has 24 rooms and counting with great bar and restaurant services. This is a true story. The name of the hotel is Water Heights Hotel in Wli where the highest waterfall in West Africa is located. It's about 15 minutes drive from mountain Afadagto, the highest mountain in Ghana. The next time you want to take a break, pass by the Water Heights Hotel for an Uncompromising Personalized Customer service.

Now, from our story you would realize that this couple didn’t have all it took a start the business. It was as though the whole world was against them. They didn’t have the capital or the expertise. You don’t need a perfect condition to take your first step. As a matter of fact you will never have perfect conditions. The only way you will create a perfect condition is when you make your first move. First moves are always accompanied with lessons. Once you get the vision, see the opportunity, have the conviction and have a glimpse of the stairs, make your move.

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step – Martin Luther King Jr.

The couple in our story didn’t just get up to build a five star hotel. In fact they haven’t built a five star hotel yet. You don’t necessarily need to make a quantum leap. All you need is that little baby step. Register that business name. Write the first word to that story. Get your first client. Register for that course. Write that proposal. Tell someone about your crazy idea. Be confused. Make the mistakes. Learn your lessons. Get better. No step is too small as long as you keep moving forward. Just do it!

If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run, then walk, if you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever  you do, you have to keep moving forward – Martin Luther King Jr.

Don’t postpone it to tomorrow. Tell that special person you love her now. Act out that heart desire right now. Show your parents all the love they need right now. Talk to that friend now. Spend time together now. Take that step that you need to take in every area of your life right now because ladies and gentlemen, there are only so many tomorrows.

The truth is that there are no guarantees when you take your first step; you can either fail or succeed. However, if you don’t take that step, there is the guarantee that you will be at the same place you were yesterday. How would you know whether you could have done it or not if you didn’t try? I'm not saying it's easy or it's going to be easy. It's hard to act. It takes courage to act.

If you don’t act, If you don’t take that step, you will never realize that desired outcome. It is said that you can’t climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pocket. Conditions may not be perfect. You might not have it all together. Notwithstanding, start right from where you are with what you have and take that little baby step to take you closer to your dreams every day. Just do it!

Hello cherished readers, noeses is back to continue the Revelations of Progress series. This post is as important as any other post. Are you ready? I’m ready. Let’s go!

When I was in primary school, I knew I had to go to school and I went to school. However, I could never bring home encouraging results. School was all about playing for me. I thought I was dumb. Suddenly along the way, I had control; I became so smart that I was counted among the best in the class. How did it happen? Noeses answers your question in this post.

Throughout this series, you probably realize that the posts so far have focused on setting the individual free from dogma and popular opinion. Noeses set forth to help people think carefully and logically about their own plans and how to lead their lives eschewing the trap of living their lives based on popular opinion. We want you to be free from the dangers of a mistaken identity. We want you to be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else.

I believe that going forward the previous posts have set the pace for you to determine what you truly want or it has at least made it quite easy. Now, it is important to note that ideally, what you want lies in the intersection of need, talent, passion and conscience. What need of the world is your talent in harmony with? Are you driven from within by passion to be involved in catering for that need? And is your conscience in support? If yes, then what you want is right in your face.

Knowing what you want alone is not enough. There is another bit that you can’t do away it. And that’s knowing why you want what you want. Sometimes the difference between achievers and non-achievers is that achievers have strong a reason for doing what they are do. If you have a strong reason that you feel drawn by your conscience to meet, you normally always get what you want. The why has a way of putting everything into perspective. Your why is essentially your PURPOSE. Your why will compel you to take action. So now, to the question; how did it happen? I found this answer later in life that not until I understood that learning was a major contributing factor to the achievement of my dreams, I was going to remain dumb for long if not forever. I became hungry for books. I started reading voraciously. My why became my awakening.

Knowing the whys has always helped in determining the hows

It is also essential to be convinced about the why. You should be convinced about why you want something. It is almost impossible to pursue something that you are not convinced about. If you are convinced about something, you are true to yourself and as a result, you are able to amass the necessary energy to thrive even in challenging times. Have you ever asked yourself why? Like why am I going to school? Like why am I doing this or that? Like why are we even here in this world? If you have ever asked yourself, you will realize that most of the answers are answers that speak to your soul. And like you will know, things that speak to your soul induce your passion. The beautiful thing about passion is that it’s infectious.

Today’s revelation is simple: find out the why to your what, find your story and for that matter your purpose and your life will never be the same.

Now that you know what you want and why you want it, what are you waiting for? Don’t worry, wait patiently as noeses comes your way with the next post on taking your first step with a practical example. Cheers!

If you are new to this blog and this series, read previous posts from "Revelations of Progress: An Introduction" to "The Power to Cause Change". It will help you appreciate the whole series more.

Some of you may be wondering why there seems to be so much focus on WRITING YOUR OWN PRAISES in the REVELATIONS OF PROGRESS series. Let me tell you why: We at Noeses believe that your ability to express your true self freely is CENTRAL to your achievement of true progress. There is a difference between waking up to what you love to do and waking up to what you do. It’s that simple!

Let’s turn our attention to today’s question: How do/can you write your own praises? To make this question a bit clearer, let’s say: how can you begin to understand yourself?, how can you find that which resonates with your heart?, how can you break the code to what makes you tick?, how can you find the key to your freedom?, And how can you even begin to write your own history every day of your life?
The answer is pretty simple. It’s the first of Plato’s four big ideas for making life more fulfilled and that’s; THINK MORE or THINK HARDER. According to Plato we are less fulfilled in our lives in large part because we rarely think carefully and logically about our plans and how to lead our lives. We tend to live our lives based on ideas derived from popular opinion. As a result we end up with the wrong values, careers and relationships. Plato continuously stresses that the idea of living your life based on popular opinion is flawed and I perfectly agree with him. His solution to this problem is: KNOW YOURSELF.

So at Noeses, our answer becomes: In order to write your own praises, know yourself by thinking more.

Thinking here refers to real thinking. Due to the fast pace of living nowadays, most of us rarely make time to do some real thinking. Even when we do, it is clouded with popular opinion. What is the longest time you have ever spent thinking? Have you ever spent days thinking properly? Thinking is a lot of work. Answers don’t come easily when you think but when they come, they are more often excellent. In our quest to know ourselves, we need to subject our own ideas to examination.
You can think with other people
Sometimes we might have to do this with like-minded people who are looking out for our good. So we can think with other people. I believe that this is what most psychology therapies are about; helping us to know ourselves better. Knowing yourself will give you the security to operate freely. If you know yourself already, don’t stay in that little shell of yours, break free because security without freedom is slavery.

Think more…..

So you can write your own history with every second you live

So you can write your own history with every stride you take (athlete/sports)

So you can write your own history with every line you write (writing)

So you can write your own history with every verse you sing (music)

So you can write your own history with every shot you take (photography)

So you can write your own history with every word you speak (leader/speaker)

So you can write your own history with every body you cut open (medicine/surgery)

So you can write your own history with every smile you give (sales/reception)

So you can write your own history with……….fill in the blanks

Think more.

I would like to remind you again that the world as you see it now was created by people who were no smarter than you. It’s your turn: make your additions and subtractions. I must say that I’m happy to see quite a number of people taking little baby steps to write their own praises. Thumbs to you all.

Today’s revelation is simple: Think more, know yourself, and express yourself freely so you can write your own Praises. This is the Revelations of Progress Series. Do you see what I see? Cheers!

Hello cherished readers, Noeses is back to continue the Revelations of Progress series. If you have missed any part of this series, don’t worry; you can still follow from here. But if you want to actually be on the same page as everyone else, you can read previous posts from “Revelations of Progress: An introduction” to “Write Your Own Praises and History Will Remember You”. Now, let’s go!

Please study the following scenarios carefully and stay with me:

On the 11th of February, 1847, a man was born who would become a world renowned inventor and businessman. He held many patents in his name in different countries around the world. Notable among his inventions is the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. He virtually lighted up our homes in a completely different way. His name is Thomas Edison.

Popularly tagged as the King of Pop, Michael Jackson created Music that transcended genres. His number one album, Thriller conquered racial divides. Michael redefined the roles of music videos and dancing in popular Music.

As an English poet, playwright and actor, William Shakespeare’s mark in literature cannot be overemphasized. Shakespeare who is considered the greatest writer in the English language, wrote comedies, histories, tragedies and tragicomedies. His 38 plays as well as 154 sonnets, capture themes and emotions that continue to be the most entertaining concept today.

Nelson Mandela is the man who sacrificed a greater part of his youth and life to the fighting for an end to apartheid in South Africa. After spending 27 years in prison he became the first elected president of post-apartheid South Africa.

The Catholic Nun and Charity worker, Mother Teresa spent 45 years of her life looking after the poor, sick, orphaned and dying. She received numerous honors including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
As one of the most significant and celebrated sports icons in the 20th century, Muhammad Ali was an American Olympic and professional boxer who proved not to be the greatest only in the ring but the greatest outside the ring too. I agree with Piers Morgan’s statement that; “he taught us to dream, to dare, and to fight for what we believe in”.

Now, after a thorough read and careful study of the above stories, what trend do you see? What is common to all the above people? Do you see what I see? The first thing that probably comes to mind is the fact that; they are great people who made some kind of difference in the world. Are we on the same page? If we are then that’s a very excellent and somewhat easy observation. Now, the observation that’s most important to me is the fact that they all changed the world in completely different ways in different field of endeavors. I believe that every human makes the grand entrance into this universe as a unique being with a unique mission. The Muhammad Alis and the Michael Jacksons all did it differently. This brings to mind the one thought that I have been stressing for some time now that; don’t be afraid to be different for your power lies in your uniqueness. We see a lot of greatness and beauty in life because of diversity. It’s true and will always be true that variety is the spice of life.

The above icons were able to make a difference in this world because of one thing. Can you guess what that is? The truth is there could be several one things but what I intend to let you know in this post is that; “they unleashed their power to cause change”. And as I said previously, they expressed this power in completely different ways. It’s important to note that the icons are not any different from any of us. We all have the power to cause change deposited in us. It’s within all of us; all we need to do is to exercise the freedom to express it as uniquely as possible and in the best way possible. Our ability to express our power to cause change in the best way possible depends on our ability to write our own praises and it is in writing your own praises that you can experience true progress.

We all have the power to cause change. The only difference is that we express or manifest this power in different ways. And our key to experiencing true progress lies in our ability to exercise the freedom to express our power to cause change as uniquely as possible.

Imagine how the world will be if there were only scientists and no musicians or comedians or writers etc. just imagine. The message here is simple; express your power to cause change in the best way possible by writing your own praises.

The question however remains; how do you write your own praises? Don’t worry,  Noeses will come your way with that in our next post titled: How to Write Your Own Praises. This is the Revelations of Progress Series. Do you see what I see? Cheers!

A young man once sought the advice of a wise and extremely successful old man. He said to the old man, “You are prosperous, popular and happy. I want to be like you. How do I become like you?” The old man said, “You don’t want to be like me. You want to be prosperous, popular and happy. But you can’t be all that by being like me.” The confused young man asked, “How do you mean?” And the old man finally said, “What you need is freedom. Before you ask me what freedom is, take your leave, go and brood over this piece of advice; ‘WRITE YOUR OWN PRAISES AND HISTORY WILL REMEMBER YOU.’”– from the depths of Noeses.

Almost everyone is searching for the answers; the secrets to living the best life possible. People are looking to different places, looking up to different people and following in the steps of ‘icons’. I think the majority of people are doing the best that they possibly can in searching for the answers; but I hope you haven’t missed the important point. Now, what is this important point? Before I reveal that, please think about and answer the following questions:
1.     What do you want to be in life?
2.      What will you do if you didn’t have to work for money?

Have you answered the questions to your satisfaction? If you haven’t, chances are that you have never really thought about it. If you have, chances are that you were very mature and ‘realistic’ about it. This means that your awareness and consciousness might have played an important role. You might have considered some factors like available jobs, the well-paying jobs, prestige, your responsibilities, your culture and what have you. I will say that you considered the system otherwise known as the current reality. Is there anything wrong with considering all that? Maybe. Do you know why? Right from the first day of your physical life experience, your parents started planting thoughts into your little mind; thoughts about how the world is, about what you can be, about the values and principles that you should hold about life etc... Those thoughts shaped your perspective about life. One very plausible possibility is that your wings of creativity and wild and free thinking were replaced with the status quo during that socialization process. Your true and inner self was probably tamed. And that’s why your answer to the two questions might not be a true reflection.

Now, back to our question; what is this important point? It’s a simple one and that is, “the happy man is a free man. Anyone who has found true progress is doing what he or she loves to do, or loves what he or she is doing. The happy man looks forward to everyday with new expectations. I’m pretty sure if you had your way you would sit your ass on a chair and write all day. Maybe you want to go to space and spend some years. Maybe you just want to make people laugh. Maybe what you really want to do is design special door locks. Maybe you just want to be a social worker. It goes on and on. You are the only one who knows what your soul finds peace doing. Are you doing that right now? When are you going to start doing it?

Following your heart; exercising the freedom to live your best life possible might make you feel different and marginalized. Do you remember that weird guy you met? That guy who would rather not comb his hair; that guy who asks a lot of strange questions; that guy who is not fond of the rules; that guy that despite all that you will admit has something special? That’s how the step to freedom is; it’s a bold one that’s taken by a few people. Don’t be afraid they will forget you. If only you will be bold enough to write your own praises history will remember you. Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of college to start and build very successful businesses. Steve Jobs dropped out of college when he didn’t know what he wanted to do in life and went on to build Apple by doing all the unconventional things you could possibly think of. Jeff Bezos took to the internet to sell books. Once upon a time, they said humans couldn’t fly. The wright brothers proved that wrong by inventing the airplane. Once upon a time they said it wasn’t possible to separate Siamese twins. Dr. Benjamin Carson defied all medical principles to make that possible. So you see, there are no definite rules. The current rules were made by people who were no smarter than you. You can put a dent in the universe. You can make the world stop for you or you can suffer silently and give great pieces of advice on your death bed.

We live in an era of speed. Almost everyone is rushing somewhere. For some people, that somewhere is unknown. There is a lot of pressure to succeed and earn a living. As a result, people find themselves doing work they don’t like. According to Gallup incorporated, only 13% of employees in the world are engaged at work. This means that the other 87% are either not engaged or actively disengaged. And since people spend a substantial part of their lives working, the quality of their workplace experience is inevitably reflected in the quality of their lives. This tells you how important it is for you to exercise your freedom when choosing a career path.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.Steve Jobs

If you want to be happy, if you want to live your best life possible and if you want to progress, then your greatest step is true freedom. The freedom to do exactly what your heart desires; what will make your soul happy forever. No one but you can give it to yourself. Claim your freedom; take it. It’s yours and yours only. It’s time to live freely, to flow freely with your soul and spirit. It’s time to write your own praises.

Write your own praises for life is short and you are already naked, so there is no reason not to follow your heart.

Write your own praises for the rules you came to meet were made by people like you.

Write your own praises for if you don’t, other people will pull in and beat you at their own game to make you lose your nerve.

Write your own praises for the Socrates, the Platos, the Aristotles and all the greatest discoverers did the same.

Write your own praises for that’s how more is added to life. That’s how life is made more beautiful.

Write your own praises for in it lies your happiness, best life and progress.

Write your own praises and write it now for the life you are living now is no rehearsal; your time is running.

Write your own praises and history will remember you!!!!

The revelation here is simple; if you want to experience true progress, you need to muster the courage to exercise your freedom. You need to break free from dogma. Simply let yourself loose. Don’t hold back anything. Live each day as if it were your last and declare always; I WILL WRITE MY OWN PRAISES AND HISTORY WILL REMEMBER ME. Cheers!
